ScoreCounter 2.0

We launched ScoreCounter.com in 2019 🚀 as a free tool for creating simple online sports scoreboards, without live broadcast feature. Users could set up basic scoreboards for different sports and project them on a gym wall, display them on a screen, or use them for personal tracking.

For seven years, our website header promised live broadcast was coming soon. The time has come and after years of user feedback, ScoreCounter has now been completely rebuilt from scratch, with live broadcasting as the central feature.

Each scoreboard type now has its own landing page, where you can configure the main game settings before creating a match. Once the game is created, you are taken to an admin page with a unique game ID and a private admin key. From there, you can update the score, control the timer, manage time-outs, and handle other game actions. The admin page also provides a live link that you can share with your audience.

The admin page now ships with an interactive preview: click a score to add a point, right-click to subtract, click the timer to start or stop it, click the period number to advance, and click the possession arrow to flip sides. The shot clock, fouls and time-out trackers respond the same way. Most of a match can be driven without touching the side panel, which keeps the operator's eyes on the game.

Don't need the live broadcast feature and prefer the old app? No worries, you can still access it at ScoreCount.com.

Why Use Score Counter as Your Online Scoreboard?

Whether you run a Sunday league, a school tournament, a Twitch stream or a community gym, you need a clear, reliable scoreboard that everyone can see in real time. ScoreCounter is a free online scoreboard that runs in any modern browser - on a laptop, a phone, a tablet, or a TV via Chromecast. Build a scoreboard once, share the live link, and update it from anywhere on the planet.

Unlike installable apps and paid scoreboard software, our sport scoreboards work over the open web. The live page renders large, broadcast-ready numbers with a clean dark theme by default, designed to read perfectly on a 1080p stream or a courtside projector. Every change you make on the admin page is reflected on every viewer's screen within milliseconds.

Live Broadcast in Any Browser, No Install Required

The live page is a single URL. Drop it into your favourite streaming software as a Browser Source in OBS or Streamlabs to use ScoreCounter as a live broadcast free online scoreboard overlay. The chroma-friendly dark backdrop, customisable colors and clean typography make it easy to key out, stack on top of camera feeds, or display in full-screen on a venue monitor.

OBS & Streamlabs - Add the live URL as a Browser Source. Resize, position, and use a color key if you want to overlay it on game footage.
YouTube & Twitch - Share the live link directly in chat or as a panel link. Spectators can open it on a phone for an at-a-glance score.
Venue display - Open the live URL in full-screen on any TV, projector, or smart display. Scores update automatically while the admin operator works elsewhere.
Chromecast / AirPlay - Cast the live tab from your phone or laptop to a TV without dedicated hardware.

Project the Scoreboard Onto a Gym Wall

School gyms, community centres and parish halls rarely have a permanent electronic scoreboard, and the wall-mounted panels that do exist often display only the home team's fixed name, or just Home vs Visitor. Score Counter turns any blank wall into a full-size scoreboard: plug a laptop into a portable video projector, open the live URL in full-screen (press F11, or use the fullscreen button on the admin page), and the wall becomes a three-metre-wide board that reads cleanly from the back row. A built-in zoom toolbar lets the operator scale the digits up or down without ever leaving fullscreen.

The dark theme holds its contrast under bright house lights, the large numerals stay legible at 20 m, and the operator runs the admin page on a tablet from the scorer's table. Pair it with a basketball, volleyball or handball preset and you have a venue display ready in under five minutes - at the running cost of one projector lamp.

One Scoreboard, Many Sports

Pick a sport preset and the timer, periods, foul rules, shot clock and possession indicator are pre-configured for you. The same engine drives basketball scoreboards, soccer scoreboards, football scoreboards, volleyball scoreboards, handball scoreboards, hockey scoreboards, water polo scoreboards and more - or you can build a fully custom layout from scratch.

Built-in features

  • Count-up or count-down match timer
  • Quarter / half / period tracker with custom labels
  • Period override for OT, SO, HT or F when regulation labels don't fit
  • Team scores with single and multi-point increments
  • Fouls and customisable foul limits
  • Timeouts as visual dot trackers
  • Shot clock with 24/14 reset, custom seconds and an optional separate-screen URL for the venue display
  • Break timer that replaces the main timer for inter-period breaks and time-outs, then hands control back to regulation time when it ends
  • Alternating possession arrow with optional label
  • Six display fonts including a seven-segment DSEG7 Classic LED look
  • Custom colour scheme and per-game CSS overrides
  • Click-to-score admin preview, browser fullscreen with zoom toolbar, and QR codes for instant phone access

What you don't need

  • No native app to install
  • No sign-up or login
  • No paid subscription
  • No proprietary streaming hardware
  • No limit on simultaneous viewers
  • No advertising on the live page

How to Set Up Your Free Online Scoreboard?

1. Pick a sport - Choose a preset (basketball, soccer, volleyball etc) or start from a blank scoreboard. Defaults are tuned to the official rules of each sport.
2. Customise the layout - Set team names, match title, colors, font, period count, timeouts, shot clock and possession indicator. Every toggle has a live preview.
3. Create the scoreboard - ScoreCounter generates two URLs: a private admin link for the operator and a public live link to share with viewers, casters or the venue display.
4. Go live - Open the admin page on your laptop or tablet and start updating the score. The live page refreshes automatically for every viewer.

At ScoreCounter, we love keeping score, but here's a win for everyone. Share the referral code for Stake and let your friends get on the scoreboard, too.

Save Settings to URL: Share Your Preset In One Link

Spent twenty minutes dialling in the perfect theme, layout, custom CSS and timer? The Save Settings to URL panel in the form bottles that whole configuration into a single link. Every input (title, team names, theme, colours, font, layout, period count, timeouts, shot clock, break duration, custom CSS) is encoded into the URL after ?settings=, so anyone who opens it lands on the home page with your preset loaded.

The link updates automatically as you tweak the form. When the preset looks right, hit Copy to clipboard to share it with co-operators, paste it into a tournament instructions document, drop it into a club Discord, or bookmark it as your league's standard. Opening the link does not create a scoreboard - it just rebuilds the form with your settings. Press Create scoreboard on the receiving end whenever you want fresh live and admin URLs for an actual match.

Recurring tournaments - Save one preset link and reuse it for every match so the board always looks the same on the broadcast.
Club templates - Hand volunteers admins a link instead of a checklist of toggles and setup instruction. They open it, hit create, and the board is live with a new admin key.
A / B layouts - Keep two preset links side-by-side and switch between them to compare layouts before going live.
No account required - The settings live in the URL, not on the server. Nothing to log in to, nothing to lose.

Designed for Streamers, Leagues and Schools

For streamers - A keyer-friendly online scoreboard you can drop into OBS as a Browser Source. Brand it with your team colors, custom fonts and CSS overrides.
For leagues & clubs - Hand the live URL to spectators on a poster or QR code. Operators control the match from the admin page; viewers see the score change instantly.
For schools & gyms - A zero-cost replacement for expensive electronic scoreboards. Run it on any laptop or tablet plugged into a TV.
For tournaments - Spin up multiple scoreboards in parallel, one per court or pitch, each with its own live URL. Pair them with the tournament bracket or a league standings table to give viewers the full picture.

Frequently asked questions

Is ScoreCounter really a free online scoreboard?

Yes. Every feature is free with no paywall, no trial, and no advertising on the live page. There is no account to create - you generate a scoreboard, get a live URL, and share it.

Can I use ScoreCounter for a live broadcast or stream overlay?

Absolutely. Add the live URL as a Browser Source in OBS, Streamlabs, vMix or any tool that supports a web overlay. The dark background and large numerals are designed for stream readability, and you can customise colors and CSS for your brand.

How do I show a custom image or logo on my scoreboard?

Use the Custom CSS field and set a background image on a scoreboard element, for example .scoreboard{background-image:url(...)}. Embed the picture as a data URI rather than linking to another website: convert your file at htmlimg.com and paste the resulting data: text in place of the URL. ScoreCounter keeps images that are embedded this way or hosted on scorecounter.com, but it strips links to outside sites. That is on purpose: a remote image URL lets the other server log every viewer's IP address each time the board loads, and the picture could change or vanish after you set it, so embedding it keeps your scoreboard private and reliable.

Which sports are supported?

Built-in presets cover basketball (FIBA, NBA, NCAA), soccer/football, American football, volleyball, handball, ice hockey, water polo, futsal and more. You can also build a custom scoreboard for any sport - the engine is sport-agnostic.

How does the break timer work?

Set a break duration in MM:SS (default 2:00), then press the break button on the admin page. The board swaps the main timer for a countdown of that length, so a half-time or time-out is impossible to miss on the live page. Stop the break early or let it run out and the regulation timer resumes from exactly where it was paused.

Can the shot clock be shown on its own screen?

Yes. Toggle "shot clock on separate screen" on the admin page and ScoreCounter generates a dedicated URL that renders just the shot clock at full size - ideal for an above-basket monitor or a second projector. The main live board keeps the rest of the scoreboard untouched, so a venue can use both screens in parallel without any extra software. Click the shot clock to reset to the full value (typically 24 s), right-click to reset to the short value (typically 14 s), or type a custom number to start from there.

How many people can watch the live scoreboard at the same time?

There is no enforced limit on simultaneous viewers. The live page is a lightweight static URL backed by efficient real-time updates, so it scales from a single venue display to a large public audience.

Can I use it on a phone or tablet?

Yes. The admin page is touch-friendly - tap to add a point, long-press for context actions. The live page is fully responsive, so spectators can follow the score on any device.

Do my viewers need an account?

No. Anyone with the live link can watch the scoreboard. Only the admin page is private - keep that link to yourself or share it with co-operators.

Is there a limit on how many scoreboards I can create?

Creating a scoreboard is free. To keep the service fast for everyone, each visitor can create up to 10 scoreboards per hour. If you need to create more than that - for example to run a large tournament or a busy venue - a higher hourly limit is available on request through an API key. Watching a live scoreboard is never limited, and scoreboards you have already created keep working normally.

Pro tip - Generate a QR code for the live URL and post it on the wall of your venue. Spectators scan it once and check the score on their own phones.
