What the Line Score Shows

The line score is the heart of any baseball board. Each inning has its own column with runs scored that frame, and three totals run down the right edge: R for runs, H for hits, E for errors. The team currently at bat is highlighted, and the inning indicator switches between top (visitor batting) and bottom (home batting).

Tip: extra inningsIf the score is tied after the final scheduled inning, a new column is added automatically. There is no inning limit; the game continues until one team leads after a complete inning.

Game Flow

Top & Bottom - Each inning has two halves. The visiting team bats in the top half, the home team in the bottom. An inning ends when both teams have batted and made three outs apiece.
Outs & Strikes - Three outs end a half-inning. A batter is out on three strikes (struck out), a caught fly ball, or being thrown out at a base. Four balls earn a walk to first.
Run Scoring - A runner scores by touching all four bases in order without being put out. A home run scores every runner on base plus the batter.
Extra Innings - If tied after the final scheduled inning, play continues in extra innings. MLB adopted the "ghost runner" on second base to start each extra inning in 2020 to shorten games.

FAQ

Does the scoreboard track balls and strikes?

This baseball scoreboard focuses on the line score (R/H/E by inning), the standard format used at every level from Little league to MLB. For pitch counts, use the admin panel to track between innings.

Can I run a game with more or fewer than 9 innings?

Yes, just pick a preset (Little League 6, softball 7, MLB 9) or type a custom inning count up to 99. Extra innings are auto added when a game is tied at the end of regulation.
